Junior League of Wichita Partners with Family Promise
to Stabilize Families at Risk for Homelessness
Wichita, KS – Junior League of Wichita is committing $50,000 and volunteer leadership to
support Family Promise of Greater Wichita in launching a new program that aims to stabilize
families who are at risk for homelessness. “It is a big challenge for many families to remain in
housing, even after they obtain temporary shelter and help with immediate needs. Without
continued support, coaching and mentorship, families are still living paycheck to paycheck and
are only one more crisis away from plummeting back into homelessness,” said Stacia
Thompson, Executive Director of Family Promise of Greater Wichita.
The new Stabilization Program, a successful model that has been implemented in other
communities, is designed to provide homeless families with an opportunity to receive ongoing
case management and support with obtaining long-term housing, employment, counseling, and
a variety of other life skills. Families will also build savings and work towards financial stability.
Junior League of Wichita President Rachel Banning stated “Junior League of Wichita has
worked with the community for the last eight years to combat child abuse through awareness,
prevention, and intervention. During that time it has become clear that there are a wide variety
of factors that contribute to cycles of maltreatment and abuse, including unstable housing. We
are excited to partner with Family Promise of Greater Wichita to break these powerful cycles
and support families in creating a healthy, stable environment for their children.”
Family Promise will work with Junior League members over the next two years to launch and
grow the program. “We are seeing an increase in families who are at risk for homelessness due
to the ongoing pandemic and associated economic hardships. The Stabilization Program will be
key to our ability to meet the evolving needs of the Wichita community,” said Thompson.
