BoardSource Trainings

Successful Nonprofits Rely on Successful Boards

To promote quality board service, the Junior League of Wichita has initiated a series of board development training and consulting opportunities:

  • Sessions for active and sustaining members who are currently serving on nonprofit board or who wish to do so are promoted internally and members are encourged to invite guests from the community who serve on nonprofit boards
  • Sessions and consultations for nonprofit community boards; customized training and reasonable pricing
We provide League members who are trained BoardSource Consultants and are prepared to work with community boards in a customized approach. BoardSource is a national organization dedicated to supporting nonprofit boards through trainings, publications, and tools. A BoardSource biannual survey reveals that board members rate themselves poorly in the areas of fundraising, community relations, and board building. Visit for more information.

The League consultants have years of volunteer and professional nonprofit board and management experience. Their combined activities represent over 65 boards and 375 years of service. The League is collaborating with the Nonprofit Chamber of Service on this initiative.

Session Topics

  • The Ten Principles of Board Governance − Overview of the roles and responsibilities of nonprofit board members to help participants become effective board members.
  • The Board's Role in Resource Development − Role of the board and individual board members in development process and strategies to support them in this process. Review the stages of fundraising.
  • Structuring High Performance Boards − Trends in board structures, committee organization, effective meetings and board building cycle.
  • Understanding Nonprofit Financials − Fiduciary responsibility of every board member. Understanding the balance sheet and income statement as well as other pertinent financial issues.

Successful organizations have engaged boards who are familiar with key governance principles. Nonprofit board governance has become increasingly professionalized in the past decade. For nonprofits, it is no longer sufficient to "do good." They must be run like a business, conform to a variety of rules and regulatioons, and demonstrate positive outcomes for those served. Training and development have far-reaching impact not only on the board members themselves, but also on their ability to insprire staff members and volunteers. Working together, they are able to grow the organization and is impact on the community.
