1980s-1990s

  • JLW supported Accent Kids, Inc., in its efforts to establish a Ronald McDonald House in Wichita. Two homes were established as homes away from home for families of critically ill children.

  • As part of the League’s 60th anniversary JLW presented the city of Wichita with a new park and recreational facility at Sleepy Hollow Park, which included a two-game field and a play area. “Adopt a Family” began in the mid-80s with 70 members assisting 23 families in need for Christmas over the winter months.

  • In 1990, JLW started Komen Wichita Race for the Cure for the Susan G. Komen organization, and with more than 1,400 participants, it was the largest first-year road race in Kansas history.

  • JLW’s 75th anniversary gift to the community in 1999 was the Pride of the Plains exhibit at Sedgwick County Zoo. The $1.5 million financial commitment today houses lions, meerkats and warthogs.
